Prayer and message from the Rector First Sunday of Epiphany

Even before the womb you have loved us, and your love has brought us to this place today. Bless us in our worship. Bless us with understanding of your word and as we go out into the world bless us with opportunity to share your story. Through our words and actions may people be drawn into your arms of love, and the whole world begin to sing your praises. Amen

The Epiphany (‘manifestation’) is not always understood as it seems like Christmas but isn’t Christmas. We focus on the story of the visit of the magi, understood as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Matthew’s account speaks simply of ‘wise men from the east’; later tradition fixed their number at three, made them kings and recalled their resonant names – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In this perspective, Epiphanytide is an apt season to pray for the worldwide mission of the Church.  It is also a season when we move from Christmas and the Incarnation towards the completion of Christ’s mission at Easter. Blessings Richard
